Looking forward, looking ahead, looking for you...

The1st4 has been quiet long enough its about time we start looking for artists to becoming involved in future projects in early 2015

We will be looking for artists for both of The1st4 strands and they are

The1st4
We are looking for live/performance artists to take part in another 1st4 like the event which took place at The Blade Factory in February have a look here.

Work can be at any stage of development, it can be durational, interactive, short, simple complex.

Equally you as artist can be at any stage of your career, we welcome emerging artist as well as established ones.

DiCTATE
DiCTATE is our experimental collaborative strand and the idea is that we ask an artist from another discipline other than live/performance to create a ‘performance score’ which will then be interpreted by a performer.

Two DiCTATE’s have already happened have a look here and saw collaborations between poets, sound artists and performers.

The venue and dates are yet to be confirmed, but if you are interested in being involved in either project please contact Chris at:

Looking forward to it!

DiCTATE Again

DiCTATE

noun - an order or principle that must be obeyed

For our second DiCTATE project (August) we are looking for an artist working in any discipline (from Graphic Design, Sound Art, Video etc…) to produce a performance score to be interpreted by a performance artist.

Here are images from the first DiCTATE featuring Ayaka Furukawa interpreting a score from Dan Mahony http://cargocollective.com/danmahony#The-Slow-Death-of-the-Jazz-Singer

If you’re interested in becoming involved in this project contact The1st4 at thfrstfur@gmail.com

DiCTATE

During the nebulous formation of this thing called The1st4 at the back of my mind I head certain ideas of what it should be and what it should attempt to do. Words like development, experiment, new work all filtered through.

All still quite nebulous, what do these words means and how would they manifest themselves?

One manifestation of this swirling concepts comes in the form of our DiCTATE strand. The idea is to take an artist whose work is not in the live/performance field (pretty board I know) and ask them to produce a 'performance score' which is then given to a performance artist to interpret.

By bringing together artists this way will see the creation of a new work and this would satisfy the ambitions for collaboration as well as creating a space for artists to develop and create new work. DiCTATE also ticks the experimental box.

Everyone involved is trying something new, untested. Both artists have not attempted to create art in this way. Myself as curator has not done this before, to programme a work which is yet to exist, we have the framework for the work, the work is in the future.

It's a risk.

Risk is one of the elements of The1st4, one of the reasons it exists. Part of The1st4 remit must involve taking risks to move forward, to allow artists to come to together create something unique, risky isn't it all part of what makes a vibrant art scene?

I hope you can join us in April to see the results of this experimentation.

The First Time

We are very pleased to announce the launch of The1st4, a new live art platform based in Liverpool, aiming to provide a space for North-West based artists working with the spectrum of live and performance art. The1st4 is a chance for established and emerging artists to show and develop work for the first time in Liverpool.

This will all start at 6.30pm on the 11th February (details here) in the Gold Room at Camp and Furance.

Every new event needs a start and this is it. Curator, artist and live art critic C James Fagan (The Double Negative) has brought together four contemporary artists for a special launch evening of performance ...and dance -- Mark Greenwood, Frances Kay, Steve Boyland and Ane Iselin Borgeland -- whose work reflects the inter-disciplinary nature of live and performance art.

New commissions and new collaborations on the night include: ‘The Grabber’ by performance artist Mark Greenwood (Lad Broke), features a performance score by visual artist Jayne Lawless (L5 6QW), and explores the erasing of housing across Liverpool and the displacement caused;

Improviser/performance artist Steve Boyland will perform Unruly Liturgies, a series of spontaneously-composed contemplations for solo voice, created in response to the specific physical and allusive properties of the space/location

 Returning to Liverpool after an appearing at 2013’s Poolside Emergency, Frances Kay (Emergency MCR ‘13) will perform ‘Sorry’, addressing notions of female identity;

And Ane Iselin Borgeland (Manifold) will perform ‘Micophono’, a dance piece which explores notions of identity through language and movement.

This evening of contemporary live art and performance at Camp and Furnace is free and all are welcome (free parking available). There will also be a paid bar running on the night.

The1st4 has come into existence in response to a gap in the cultural landscape of Liverpool. The1st4 aims to fill this gap with a regular series of events which will offer a space for locally based artists to show and develop new work, to network and collaborate. The1st4 also has ambitions to bring in some of the best national and international live and performance artists to ensure Liverpool’s standing as a major cultural centre.
